Precision Investment Casting

27 mai 2011

Investment casting is one of the oldest known metalworking processes in existence. Beginning more than 5,000 years ago as “lost wax investment casting” the historical process used bee’s wax to form a pattern which was then used to create various components and products.

Fast forward to today, thousands of years later and the science remains the same. However, investment casting foundries all over the world have introduced new innovations such as high-tech waxes, advanced refractory materials, and the many advances made possible by computers and computer aided design.

Similar to the results of our ancient ancestors when they did it, casting provides unparalleled accuracy, repeatability, and quality — this makes the investment casting of small parts and large parts in high quality alloys a fantastic alternative to other less precise fabricating methods.

The Investment Casting Process: An Overview

Design
The investment casting process begins with a design. This can be a drawing or an existing prototype part.

Mold Making The next step is mold making. From a drawing, design, or prototype the investment casting foundry produces an injection mold. This wax pattern injection mold is then machined using computer assisted design and/or computer aided manufacturing, a marriage of both ancient science and cutting edge technology.

Wax Pattern Assembly

Multiple wax pattern injection molds are assembled on a tree or “sprue” to form the full part.

Coating

Precision Casting Products , Automotive investment Castings , Stainless steel casting, Marine castings

In the next part of the process, a ceramic shell or prime slurry is applied to the tree or sprue, coating the wax assembly in a fine ceramic liquid. While the slurry is still wet, it is covered in a very fine sand and then allowed to dry before another slurry and more sand is applied. This is repeated until there are 6 or more layers of ceramic shell on the wax assembly

Wax Removal

Next in the process, the ceramic shells are prepared for the wax assembly to be removed from the inside. This is done with an autoclave, where the ceramic shells are put on a tray and the autoclave uses steam to melt the wax inside the mold.

High Temp Burnout

After wax is removed the ceramic shells are subjected to a high-temperature burnout to cure the ceramic molds. After this process they are prepared for preheating and casting.

Metal Melting and Casting

In this step of the precision investment casting process, high quality alloys are melted in lined furnaces. This step is absolutely critical to ensure the casting quality. Also in this part of the process, degassing and alloying are performed to ensure the melted metal’s properties are optimal for pouring. This metal is then cast into the ceramic mold.

Cooling
After cooling, the metal casting takes the shape of what was once the wax pattern. Once the casting cools, the ceramic shell is removed with high powered water jets, leaving the casting foundry with a completed metal investment casting.

Cut Off, Grinding, and Finishing
Unwanted gates are then cut off with a saw and further removed by grinding. This is followed by de-burring and hand tooling, machining, and finishing resulting in a completed and finished casting.

All About Deep Groove Ball Bearings

27 mai 2011

A bearing is a device to allow constrained relative motion between two or more parts, typically rotation or linear movement. Bearings may be classified broadly according to the motions they allow and according to their principle of operation as well as by the directions of applied loads they can handle. There are many different types of bearings among which the ball bearing is rather common. They have various applications. They are commonly used in machinery industry and in wheels of vehicles like cars , buses and motorcycles. It is very important to maintain them. If the maintenance is done properly, the life span of these products will be maximized.

Ball Bearing, Ball Bearings , Deep Groove Ball Bearing , Nonstandard bearing , Stainless steel bearing, Bicycle Bearing ,OEM bearings,, Power tool bearing ,Air Conditioner Bearing
Among all these different categories, the deep groove ball bearing is the most common one. The basic model of this product consists of an outer ring, an inner ring, steel balls and cages.

The structure of these bearings is quite simple. It is very easy to use them. Moreover, it is a kind of product which has the largest production volume and wide range of applications. They are mainly used to bear radial load, meanwhile, they can also bear some axial load. When the radial internal clearance of bearing is enlarged, they will have features of angular contact ball bearings and they can bear larger axial load. Compared to other kinds of bearing products which have the same size with them, the deep groove ball bearings have smaller coefficient of friction and higher rotation speed. Besides, they can replace thrust ball bearings to support axial loads under very high rotation speed.

When they are installed in the shaft , they can limit the axial displacement of the shaft or housing in both directions within the axial clearance. Therefore, they can make axial positioning in two directions. Additionally, this type of product has a certain ability of aligning. Most of their cages are steel stamping ribbon cages.

The manufacturing costs of them are relatively low. In addition to basic models of deep groove ball bearings, there are still many others such as deep groove ball bearings with dust cover, or with a rubber seal ring and double row deep groove ball bearings, etc.

There are many advantages of this kind of bearing products. Firstly, they are suitable for high speed and high rotation operation. Secondly, they are very durable even without regular maintenance. Thirdly, they have small friction coefficient and low costs of manufacturing. Fourthly, they have various sizes and models which can meet different requirements.

Three Main Types of the Hydraulic Motors

17 mai 2011

Hydraulic motor is the mechanical component which is attached with the circuit, pump, valves, filters, hoses, metal tubing and other suitable parts. Without this attachment, hydraulic motor would fail to affect well at utilizing the pressure of the controlled fluid. In order to meet the specific equipments in plenty of industrial applications, hydraulic motors are designed and manufactured into three main categories. They are the gear motors, vane motors and piston motors. Although the general operating capacity is the same, they hold their own features respectively.

In terms of the gear motors, there are two types available. They are the internal and external types. For the former one, an output Shaft and inner-outer gear set is placed inside. And the latter type is designed with a single housing within the matched gears. These two core parts of two main types are responsible for the through flow. Besides, vane motors are also popular among the market of various hydraulic motors. They are the ones to be constructed of a slotted rotor onto the driving shaft, just like the wings of the equipment. This type is designed to move to tight the ring of transitional ramps or sections in a radial direction. And the comprehensive balance of the equipment is kept by the grooves and holes during the whole operating process.

Food sold in recycled cardboard packaging

11 martie 2011

Researchers found toxic chemicals from recycled newspapers had contaminated food sold in many cardboard cartons.

The chemicals, known as mineral oils, come from printing inks.

Cereal firm Jordans has stopped using recycled cardboard and other firms are to ensure their recycled packaging does not contain any toxic oils.

Kellogg’s and Weetabix said they were taking steps to reduce the amount of mineral oil in their packaging.

Exposure to mineral oils has been linked to inflammation of internal organs and cancer.

Government scientists in Switzerland found quantities of mineral oils between 10 and 100 times above the agreed limit in foods like pasta, rice and cereals sold in cartons made from recycled cardboard.

‘Frightening’ potential

Should there be any evidence from our study – and we will carry out a risk assessment – we will take immediate action to protect the public.”

Terry Donohoe
Food Standards Agency
In one scientific paper they describe the potential for mineral oils to migrate into foodstuffs as “frightening”.

However, the Swiss food safety authorities have concluded that consumers who eat a balanced and varied diet have no need to worry.

In a statement Jordans said that, as an environmentally responsible company which had previously used largely recycled packaging, it had taken the decision to abandon it reluctantly, but felt it was sensible.

The BBC investigation found other food companies were aware of the issue – but none had so far followed Jordans’ lead.

More than half the cardboard used in Europe is made from recycled materials.

So-called “virgin board” from newly harvested trees is more expensive and there is not enough of it to replace recycled card completely.

The research has been led by Dr Koni Grob at the government-run food safety laboratory of the Canton of Zurich.

In one study for the German food ministry last year he and his colleagues tested a sample of 119 products bought from German supermarkets.

They found mineral oils passed easily through many of the inner bags used to keep food dry and fresh.

More than half of Europe’s cardboard is made from recycled materials
The longer a product stood on the shelves, the more mineral oil it was likely to absorb.

Dr Grob told the BBC: “Roughly 30 products from these 119 were free of mineral oil.

“For the others they all exceeded the limit, and most exceeded it more than 10 times, and we calculated that in the long run they would probably exceed the limit 50 times on average and many will exceed it several hundred times.”

The agreed safe limit for mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons, derived from an expert evaluation carried out for the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organisation, is a migration of 0.6mg per kilogram.

Two effects

Studies on rats have highlighted the dangers to health of mineral oils.

Dr Grob said: “Toxicologists talk about two effects. One is the chronic inflammation of various internal organs and the other one is cancer.”

Ala: paper packaging , corrugated boxes , injection molded packaging , clamshells , clamshell packaging

But he stressed consumers would have to be exposed to contaminated foods over many years for their health to be at risk.

The Food and Drink Federation, which represents Britain’s food companies, said the Swiss study was “a good starting point for further investigations” – but not enough in itself to justify discontinuing the use of recycled card.

How to Choose the Right Air Compressor

11 martie 2011

Air compressors have been around for well over 100 years and have as many uses as there are tools that use air. One reason for their popularity is because air as a resource is safe, flexible, clean and convenient. These machines have evolved into highly reliable pieces of equipment that are almost indispensable in most of the applications they serve. Compressors can come in a wide variety of different types and sizes.

Ultimately, as with any tool, air tools and the compressors that drive them, have to save the user time and money on any given project. Most compressed air tools are more powerful and typically lighter than standard electric tools or battery powered cordless tools. They are used by virtually every industrial sector from aircraft to automobiles to dairy farming to textiles.

While there are many types of compressors, they all perform the same function, which is to increase the pressure and reduce the volume of a given gas such as air. The most common type of compressors work by filling a chamber with air and then reducing the chamber’s volume. These are called positive displacement compressors. They are the most widely available compressors and include reciprocating, rotary screw and rotary vane compressors.

Of all the positive displacement compressors, Reciprocating or Piston compressors are the most commonly available on the market and can be found in ranges from fractional to very high horsepower. These compressors are sold world wide by many mass marketers and a large variety of retail outlets.

Rotary compressors (Screw and Vane) and the centrifugal compressors are also commonly found but in more of an industrial/commercial environment. Normally they are operated at significantly higher horsepower and flow rates, which makes them more expensive buy and to operate. For more information on rotary compressors please visit www.daveycompressor.com.

The following paragraphs contain some very general information on piston compressors that will allow for a more informed decision concerning the type and size of compressor being considered.

Reducing Your Water Bills With a Water Meter

11 martie 2011

Water is must for us and we can’t survive without it, however the growing population has made it difficult for the authorities to supply adequate water for all. In this scenario, as users we should take some concrete steps to reduce the consumption of water as much as possible. Saving water helps not only in reducing bills but it also conserves the environment .

The key advantage one could obtain with a water meter is that the bill will be charged against the actual use. Normally before, the same amount of bill is charged to all irrespective of the quantity consumed. So installation of a water meter encourages families to take genuine measures to make key lifestyle changes which involves taking a shower instead of having a bath, flushing the toilet less regularly, turning off the tap while brushing teeth , avoiding the use of a garden sprinkler system, fitting a new washer on dripping taps, using the washing machine or dish washer only when there is a full load and many other such steps. These will in the process minimize consumption and save money.

As per experts the average metered water bill is $445 in comparison to $535 for that of unmetered bill. The stats reveal that water meter can bring about 20% savings in monthly bill. This saving is brought by the conscious effort put forward by the users to save water and the environment.

The studies by the Environmental Agencies have shown that the ground water levels are the lowest in 20 years. The average family use of water in developed countries is 153 liters of water everyday whereas their developing counterparts are contented with only 20 liters a day. Since we use the water more it is our responsibility to save it.

Casting Off the Crutch of Cheap Gas

3 martie 2011

The government’s plan to restrict subsidized fuel for private cars in Greater Jakarta this April has garnered much criticism — enough that it seems Coordinating Minister of the Economy Hatta Rajasa has considered rescheduling the program.

Critics say the program would negatively affect the economy both for producers and consumers by driving up the price of commodities. Moreover, they say, the poorest citizens would be hardest-hit.

But although the restriction on the subsidized fuel program will indeed adversely affect the economy and the poor in the short term, most of the negative effects will not last. Indeed, in the long term the restrictions will lift the Indonesian economy. Freeing the government of its expenditure on subsidies would allow it to finance the development programs that the poor desperately need.

For decades, fuel subsidies in Indonesia have encouraged an inefficient national budget and lackluster development because they have created market distortion. The group that has seen the greatest benefit from the program is not the poor, but the wealthier households that own the vehicles which run on cheap gas.

The policy can distort economic development because it can foster a sense of extravagance in fuel consumption, even while the supply of fuel is quite limited and highly influenced by global oil prices. If global oil prices begin to rise suddenly (as they have been doing steadily due to the wave of unrest sweeping the Middle East), the government is then forced to reallocate funds from other programs in order to keep prices stable here in Indonesia.

In other words, the fuel subsidy program reinforces inefficient practices in the economy and curbs the effectiveness of other government programs.

On the flip side, restricting the purchase of subsidized fuel by private car owners could potentially save the government Rp 3 trillion per year in the Greater Jakarta region alone.

Nationwide, the government could save about Rp 20 trillion from 2011 to 2013. If the program were expanded to include all fuel subsidies, the government could save a staggering Rp 92.8 trillion per year, based on the subsidies allocation in 2011.

Not allowing the restrictions will increase our budget deficit, harming the government’s ability to finance programs meant to foster economic development.

In particular, the government could use the savings to increase financing for infrastructure to support development in six main regions: Sumatra , Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali -Nusa Tenggara and Papua-Maluku.

Investing in quality infrastructure will encourage new economic growth centers across the country. Moreover, the government can use the savings to increase Indonesian competitiveness with an end goal of attracting more foreign investment . Currently, the nation’s competitiveness, as ranked against other countries, is woefully lacking and clearly one of the main impediments to a thriving economy.

According to the World Bank’s annual Doing Business survey, which ranks countries’ competitiveness, Indonesia actually dropped six places‚ from 115 to 121 (out of 183 countries), over the last year.

The government could use the money saved from cutting the fuel subsidy to finance programs to reverse the decline in our competitiveness. For example, money could go to enhance the quality of public services, helping to attract investors to do their business in this country.

At the same time, the government can use some of the savings to implement affirmative action policies to protect poor households. For example, the government could launch a social safety net program to fulfill basic needs through direct grants or cash transfers based on minimum living needs. The government should help the poor to gain access to free education, health care, working capital and low-priced electricity. The policies should benefit the poor, not households with medium and high incomes.

Another benefit of the restriction or removal of subsidies on gasoline is the environmental one, especially in the country’s bigger (and fast-growing) cities. Dropping fuel subsidies can reduce wasteful consumption of hydrocarbon energy and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Overall quality of life, especially for city dwellers, will increase, reducing expenditure by citizens and the government on health care.

For these above reasons, I believe that the government’s plan to limit fuel subsidies is the right choice, and the government should not delay the program. However, this limitation program should proceed toward the removal of fuel subsidies entirely to avoid loopholes which could detract from the program’s wider goals. In particular, if a restriction on buying cheap fuel only applies to private vehicle drivers in the Jabodetabek area, those immediately affected could dodge the higher prices by buying their gasoline in other regions or from bus drivers looking to make a little cash on the side.

Therefore, in my opinion, the main problem for the government is not whether to implement a fuel subsidy restriction or delay it, but rather to consider eliminating all fuel subsidies entirely for the good of the nation.

Ping Anser Irons

3 martie 2011

There are some things about the latest iron introduction from Ping that feel more than a little retro.

Let’s start with the name, Anser, which is probably the most famous product name ever to come out of Ping, mostly for the finely crafted putters that have born that appellation over the years. But it is also because the Arizona equipment company once produced an Anser iron – more than 40 years ago.

Then, there is the fact that the Ping Anser iron is forged. That’s how Karsten Solheim made his first irons back in the 1960s. But then he got into investment casting , with the K1 iron in 1969, and never used that process again. In time, Ping became famous for its investment cast irons, and forging seemed to be something other club manufacturers did.

Of course, all the nostalgia in the world doesn’t mean a thing if the new Ping Anser forged irons, which were released in North America last November after first selling quite successfully in Japan, didn’t have the looks and design to perform in modern times . And by all accounts, they do.

“We’ve pushed the forging process (in the Anser iron) to a new level, and I know golfers in the U.S. and Canada will be as eager to play it as they have been in Japan,” says Ping chairman and CEO John Solheim.

The modern Ping Anser combines an 8620 steel body with a tungsten sole and features a machined face and grooves designed to improve spin and control. Company engineers say the club’s hollow-sole cavity design softens feel and positions the center of gravity in such a way that it generates higher launching iron shots.

In addition, they assert, the progressive set design offers forgiveness in the long irons and greater control in the short ones. There is minimal offset, and the thin top line gives it more the look of a player’s club, though it is designed to be a true crossover .

“It’s forgiving, yet it provides workability for the better player,” says Solheim. “And the feel is amazing.”

The Anser iron is available in 3- to 9-iron plus PW, and comes stock with steel Project X shafts.
